Surveillance and Pre-Control Intelligence
Good Information Equals Better Results
At Hunter Feral Control, we believe that effective feral animal control begins before any action is taken in the field. A large part of achieving successful outcomes comes down to gathering accurate, relevant information to guide planning, save time, reduce costs, and ensure minimal disruption to property owners and surrounding communities.
This phase—known as surveillance or pre-control intelligence—allows us to identify the target species, their habits, locations, and movement patterns before committing resources to control efforts.
Where Does the Information Come From?
We use a combination of technology, local knowledge, and professional observation to gather critical information. Common sources include:
-
Trail cameras
-
Landholder knowledge of the property
-
Neighbouring property owner or community reports
-
Historical data (e.g. stock loss records, previous sightings)
-
Online resources and wildlife mapping tools
-
Input from Local Land Services or government agencies
There is often a wealth of valuable intel available—if you know where to look and how to interpret it.
Our Process
Before we begin any operational control, we prioritise surveillance to confirm:
-
What species is present
-
Where they are active
-
How many animals are involved
-
What time of day or season they are moving
-
What the most effective control method is likely to be
This information dramatically increases success rates and helps avoid wasted effort or misdirected resources.
Example: Wild Dog Surveillance
When responding to wild dog activity, our approach might include the following steps:
-
Property Inspection
We conduct a walkthrough of the affected areas with the landholder or property manager to understand likely movement corridors, scent trails, kill sites, or denning areas. -
Trail Camera Deployment
We encourage the use of trail cameras at strategic locations. Landholders who own cameras can deploy them with our guidance, or we can hire units to the property for a small fee. -
Community Knowledge Gathering
We ask the landholder to contact nearby property owners for shared observations or supporting evidence of wild dog activity. These conversations often uncover patterns that are not obvious from a single property. -
Historical Review
If previous events or losses have occurred, we examine that information to identify trends and hotspots that may still be relevant.
Once this information is gathered, we develop a clear action plan, tailored to the scale, species, and site-specific challenges. In some cases, we may determine that only a single dog is moving through during breeding season—making it suitable for a targeted removal using thermal imaging and suppressed firearms.
The Value of Good Surveillance
Time and again, we see the benefit of pre-control surveillance. A well-informed plan not only saves money and time, but also leads to faster, cleaner, and more humane outcomes. It prevents unnecessary disruption to your business, neighbours, or property, and ensures that every action taken in the field is driven by evidence.
